United Negro College Fund Scholarship Redesign
Overview
UNCF’s mission is to provide equal education opportunities to students everywhere. In order to achieve that mission, UNCF’s Scholarship Portal required a redesign where students can easily search for scholarship opportunities and programs, apply for scholarships, and track their application status. Students expressed difficulty with using the portal because of its usability issues, unintuitive navigation, and lack of guidance.
In the five-week timeline of the design phase, my role was to lead a team of junior designers to build an effective user experience utilizing Salesforce Lightning design system components and UX best practices. We designed for five different user groups who accessed the portal: applicants, UNCF admins, references, institutions, and students.

Designing The Product
The team designed visual compositions for the five user groups using guidelines from Salesforce Lightning’s design system and UNCF’s branding. Throughout the product design phase, the team considered UX best practices, product requirements from the functional team and client, technical constraints, and frustrations and needs expressed by users in a timeline of five weeks. We designed a minimalist and modern experience that showed statuses, help, documentation, and progression, which were major pain points in the former portal’s designs. We also designed a consistent experience across all five user groups to reduce the technical effort of the engineering team and achieve an overall look and feel of the new portal.
